Dear Sir,

In a recent issue of the New Left Review, Mr. Alan Lovell was quoted as having said in an interview that there was some reason to suppose there was opposition within the Soviet Union to the possession of nuclear weapons by the Soviet Government. I have several times asked Mr. Lovell privately what this evidence is and since he has not replied, may I now challenge him publicly in your columns?

Yours faithfully,
